Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl died on 16 June in his hometown of Ludwigshafen at 87.

A long-serving leader of the ruling CDU party, he relentlessly worked on the reunification of Western and Eastern Germany, symbolised by the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 and paved the way towards introducing the European single currency, and the enlargement of the EU to former Communist countries.
