A year from the failed coup against president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the crackdown on opposition is getting harder: on 17 July, the Parliament extended the state of emergency by three months, in the last chapter of the growing authoritarian path the regime has taken.

It's within this context that Erdoğan said, in a speech on 16 July, that he would support the reinstatement of death penalty should the Parliament vote it — a move which would immediately end any attempt of Turkey joining the EU..
