Press cartoon of the week General election in Hungary

Orbán and Brussels

Published on 11 April 2018 at 17:05

The broad victory of Fidesz in the 8 April general election confirms the popular support enjoyed by Prime minister Viktor Orbán's populist, anti-immigration, nationalist and eurosceptic policies – though he happily welcomes EU subsidies.

Fidesz won 49 percent of votes, followed by the far-right Jobbik, with 20 percent. The Social democrats received a mere 12 percent of votes. Orbán has secured a third consecutive term in office since 2010 (and a fourth one in total, taking into account the period between 1998 and 2002).
