David Cameron's Cabinet has listed four key demands the EU must satisfy to keep Britain in the Union.
Tim Ross reports on the Daily Telegraph:
- Britain must be formally exempt from the principle of an “ever closer union”.
- It must be official that Europe is a “multi-currency” union and the euro is not its official currency.
- In order to repatriate powers, groups of national parliaments must be able to stop proposed directives and to abolish existing EU laws.
- The EU must be reorganised to prevent eurozone countries from dominating the others. Particular protections must be given to the City of London.
British diplomats have been sent to win support in Europe for a new deal based on the four demands ahead of an “in-out” referendum to be held before the end of 2017.
A new campaign will on Monday attempt to persuade voters to choose to stay in the EU. The Cabinet believes the campaign can succeed if the four conditions are met.
