Bulgaria: Hezbollah and the EU
6 February 2013
A Bulgarian government report has blamed the military wing of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah for the suicide bombing at Burgas airport, in the country's east, which killed five Israeli tourists and a bus driver – in addition to the suicide bomber himself – on July 18, 2012.
The announcement has caused controversy in Bulgaria among parts of the press and opposition, which claims evidence of Hezbollah involvement is murky and that the Bulgarian government has succumbed to pressure from the United States and Israel. Hezbollah, which is considered a terrorist organisation by several countries including the US, has denied involvement.
The European Union has announced it will consider adding Hezbollah to its list of terrorist organisations.
