Balkans: Playing chicken
18 April 2013
The Kosovo government announced that negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina on the status of the Serbian minority in Kosovo would resume on April 19 in Brussels after the failure of talks on April 17 between the prime ministers of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, (left), and Serbia, Ivica Dačić, (right), led by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton (in purple).
The Kosovo delegation returned to Brussels on April 18 at the request of Ashton, who plans to wrap up negotiations ahead of the meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers on 22 April. In turn, European Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle (yellow tie) postponed publication of a report expected on April 16 on the progress of reforms to lead Serbia towards the EU membership in order to facilitate the negotiations.
