The 66th Cannes Film Festival opened on May 15, the same day, Eurostat published its figures on GDP growth in the European Union during the first quarter of the year. The figures make grim reading and show that the Eurozone economy is in the middle of the longest period of recession since the single currency's creation in 2002.

The figures also reveal that France officially entered recession for the first time since 2009.
