Italy: Into reverse

On October 2, the Italian parliament passed a vote of confidence in the government led by Prime Minister Enrico Letta. Following the resignation of its five cabinet ministers and Silvio Berlusconi's announcement on the previous day that he would vote against, the People of Freedom (PDL) were threatening to bring down the administration.
However, faced with the possible break-up of the party, Berlusconi and most of his supporters finally voted to keep Letta in office — an about-face that the Italian press has described as a "surrender", and a "rout".
