EuroMaidan, the nickname for the pro-European protests – so-called because they have been based in Kiev's Independence Square (Maidan in Ukrainian) – continued to attack President Viktor Yanukovych and his government on December 9.

Amid rumours of an impending assault by Ukrainian special forces on the demonstrators, anti-government activists set up medical facilities around Kiev, a stronghold of opposition.
