The stand-off between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the thousands of pro-European protesters camped out in Kiev’s Independence Square was continuing, as protest leaders met the president for talks on December 13.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton wrapped up her trip to the Ukraine earlier in the week, after holding a meeting Yanukovych in which he said he now intended to sign a trade pact with the EU but gave no timescale for when this would be completed.
