EU Foreign and home affairs ministers announced on 20 April a 10-point action plan for "immediate action" on the current humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean. This follows the deaths at sea of more than 1,200 migrants in less than a week. Increased financial backing for the current Triton and Poseidon EU patrol missions, part of the Frontex border monitoring agency, and "a systematic effort to capture and destroy vessels used by the smugglers" form part of the action plan.

Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders and the Migrant Offshore Aid Station announced they will start a joint search and rescue and medical assistance mission in Central Mediterranean.
