On September 22 – in one month to the day – Germans will head to the polls to elect a new Parliament. Due to Germany's role in Europe, and because of the political weight that it wields within the European Union (in addition to its traditional economic clout), this ballot is sometimes called "the first round of the European elections," which are themselves scheduled for next May.
That is why starting from today and during the coming weeks leading up to the vote, Presseurop is focusing particular attention on Germany. We will attempt to explain the key issues of the campaign – both national and European – through the eyes of the German press, of course, but also through the eyes of neighbouring countries.
We will attempt to describe the state of mind of the Germans and how they see their role within Europe, so as better to understand this country which so many Europeans discuss daily despite not really knowing what makes it tick.
