Food reality show makes mincemeat of elections

Published on 4 June 2009 at 10:18

Few Flemish speaking Belgians are interested in this June’s European and regional elections, but they are spellbound by a TV reality show called Mijn restaurant (My Restaurant), a knock-out contest that makes one couple’s dream come true - to open a restaurant. Daily De Standaard excitedly reports that on the night of the final, TV channel VTM broke all records with more than 1.5 millions Flemish glued to their sets - 68% of audience share. My Restaurant is not only "good spicey TV fare made by pros," exults the newspaper. "It also satisfies our Flemish nature. Because good grub and nice dinners are our favorite talking point of discussion. We love comparing restaurants. (…) It’s a cliché, but Flemish will always bon-vivants."
