Romania has got to do a better job of fighting corruption and organised crime, while Bulgaria seems to be on the right track now. This is the bottom line of the latest European Commission report on the two countries’ progress in cleaning up their act, which was presented on 23 March and excerpts from which have come out in the Bucharest daily România liberă. "Investigations into cases of top-tier corruption in Bucharest are constantly delayed; Sofia, on the other hand, is now showing a genuine political will to combat organised crime and corruption,” cites the paper. The battle is far from won, corroborates another Romanian paper, Jurnalul Naţional, calling attention to the fact that in several towns, people have been recently rallying to show support for their mayors indicted for corruption: "Romanians are no longer taking to the streets to call for a better life, but to support big wheels in handcuffs,” bemoans the paper.
