Land recovery law raises swindle fears

On its front page, Evenimentul zileireports on a new controversial law, which will enable some 600,000 Romanians to recover land confiscated by the communist regime more than 20 years ago. “For years, claims for confiscated land were sent from one state institution to another,” writes the daily. But now the government is offering compensation in the form of equivalent areas of land, which may be located anywhere in the country. Most of the land concerned has been rented, and the state, which has been hard-hit by the economic crisis, does not want to cover the additional costs associated with displacing the current tenants. The daily also notes that some people are worried that the landowners will claim title to tracts of land that are more valuable than their original properties.
