“Prime Minister insists the people will have a say on divorce”: The Times of Malta reports that government leader Lawrence Gonzi has criticised a private member’s bill presented by nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, which aims to authorise divorce in Malta. The Prime Minister believes that the issue is too important to be decided by a vote of the 69 members of the island’s parliament, and should be put to a referendum or at least feature in an election manifesto. Malta is the only country in the EU where divorce is still forbidden.
