“The ‘Ndrangheta in Milan: 300 people arrested”, headlines La Stampa. On 13 July, Italian police carried out a large operation against the Calabrian mafia’s criminal network involved in drug and arms smuggling, murder, loan sharking and corruption in the north of Italy. The heads of the different families who make up the ‘Ndrangheta organization, all hailing from small villages in the southern region of Calabria, have been recently trying to use their political connections to obtain a lion’s share of contracts for Milan’s Expo 2015 and on the post-earthquake reconstruction of L’Aquila.
