"The emptiness the day after" headlines the Frankfurter Rundschau, following a stampede in a tunnel during the Love Parade in Duisburg that led to the deaths of 19 revellers, along with 340 injured. "Historically, the Love Parade brings out excited throngs ready to lose themselves to extreme states", observes the paper, noting that the readiness to surge uncontrollably en masse is rivalled only by crowds at major football matches. According to the daily, to have forced the crowd to seek entry through a tunnel, the very type of space apt to bring out claustrophobic anxiety, was a catastrophic error and the decision to put an end to future Love Parades is justified.
