“Breeze of optimism,” headlines La Libre Belgique in its report on the gruelling negotiations which took place at the weekend between representatives of Flemish and Francophone parties under socialist Elio di Rupo, who is trying to manage the "pre-formation" of the country’s next government. “In just a few hours, the mood among the seven negotiators… has changed from one of weary depression to borderline euphoria,” continues the daily. The Francophones have agreed to compromise on the main bone of contention: the transfer of authority from the federal government to the regions. If a consensus can be reached on the reforms to be implemented, a coalition government could soon be appointed, it believes.
