“No cross in front of the Palace”, headlines Gazeta Wyborcza. The cross placed by boy scouts in front of the presidential palace after the air crash near Smoleńsk on April 10, in which 96 top Polish officials — including President Lech Kaczyński — were killed, was moved yesterday to the chapel within the palace itself. In recent months it has become “the root of political and religious conflict” and the scene of protests by its “defenders” as well as opponents. The opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party and the cross’ “defenders” harshly criticised the move.
