Italy: ‘Boost for Grillo: Italy ungovernable’
26 February 2013
In general elections on February 24 and 25, comic Beppe Grillo’s Five Star Movement became the Italian political party to win the most votes.
The centre-left coalition led by Pierluigi Bersani won a majority of seats in the lower house of parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, (340 from a possible 630), but failed to gain control of the Senate (120 seats from a possible 315), where bonus seats are distributed on the basis of regional votes.
With no clear majority in the wake of the vote, Bersani will be will be forced to seek allies among his adversaries in his bid to form a new government. The outcome will be a country that is “politically and also technically ungovernable, with only a few options that are dependent on unwieldy or numerically insufficient alliances,” notes the daily.
