Belgian Minister for Finance, Flemish Christian Democrat Steven Vanackere, resigned on March 5.
His status had been called into question by Flemish nationalists of the N-VA (New Flemish Alliance), who highlighted a possible conflict of interest between the Christian Workers’ Movement (MOC) and the state owned bank, Belfius, formerly known as Dexia.
“When the dust has settled, you will see that there was no reason for any reproach,” he declared at a press conference. He will be replaced by another Flemish Christian Democrat, Koen Geens.
