The UK domestic security service MI5 carried out preliminary assessments eight years earlier of the two men who stabbed a soldier to death outside a London army barracks, but judged they were “peripheral figures” and did not warrant a full-scale investigation, reports The Guardian.

Police identified the victim as 25-year-old father-of-one Lee Rigby, who served a six month tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2009.

Detectives named one of the suspects as Michael Olumide Adebolajo and raided two London properties, arresting a 29-year-old man and woman for conspiracy to murder, “suggesting there may have been a wider conspiracy to carry out the attack,” adds the newspaper.
