Jovica Stanišić, the former head of Serbian State Security and Franko Simatović, former Commander in Chief of the Serbian police's Special Operations Unit, were acquitted on May 30 by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
The court ruled that the two men, pillars of the regime of former Serbian President Slobodan Milošević, "did not participate in a joint criminal enterprise" with the Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1991 to 1995, reports Serbian daily Politica.
The court found that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the actions of Stanišić and Simatović alongside Serbian and Croatian forces in Vukovar, in 1991, "shared the intent to further the common criminal purpose of the joint criminal enterprise," the paper reports. On May 29, the Court sentenced six Croatian officials for crimes in Bosnia.
