Greece's three coalition partners were unable to agree a single anti-racist law and the government will instead introduce two separate bills in parliament.
The two left-wing parties, Pasok and Dimar agreed on a proposal that punishes the incitement to hate crimes and which is largely aimed the extreme-right New Dawn Party. As for the right-wing New Democracy Party of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, it is introducing a proposal that does not ban parties whose members exhibit racist behaviour.
"Legal sources indicate that the two proposals are going in the same direction and that some fine-tuning could allow to reach a consensus," notes Greek daily Ta Nea. A third proposal is due to be introduced early next week by the radical left Syriza Party.
