“We booed them,” headlines Gazeta Wyborcza referring to the stand off between extreme right supporters and their left wing opponents during 11 November celebrations of Polish Independence Day. A record number of participants took part in both demonstrations, with some 2,000 members of the National Radical Camp (ONR) facing a 3,000 strong coalition of feminists, antifascists, homosexuals and left-wing sympathisers. The latter, following the advice of Gazeta Wyborcza, brought whistles to drown out their opponents’ slogans and blocked their way, leading to minor scuffles and a number of arrests. “The tide of nationalism is rising in Europe and it has come to Poland,” warns the liberal daily.
