“Revealed. How America sees the world,” runs Der Spiegel's front page. Along with The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Mondeand El Pais, the German weekly has published some of the 250,000 American embassy cables made available online by Wikileaks on 28 November. The classified documents include disparaging references to many world leaders: Angela Merkel allegedly “avoids risk and is rarely creative”; Nicolas Sarkozy is an “emperor without clothes”; Silvio Berlusconi is exhausted by “wild parties”; and Vladimir Putin is the “alpha-dog” of the Russian pack. Der Spiegel also notes that American diplomats are instructed to collect personal information and even DNA of diverse diplomats, foreign dignitaries, U.N. officials and NGO activists.
