“Game’s up,” announces La Dernière Heure. On 4 January, over 200 days after the general elections, “royal mediator” Johan Vande Lanotte submitted proposals for the institutional reform of Belgium. The seven leading Flemish and French-speaking parties are now called upon to take a stance on the proposals. A regional power-sharing deal would pave the way at long last for the formation of a government. So today, 5 January, will be a “fateful day” for the nation, observes the Belgian tabloid, as a refusal to make terms would plunge the country even deeper in the ongoing crisis. Flemish nationalist Bart de Wever and Francophone socialist leader Elio Di Rupo are the key pieces on La Dernière Heure’s front-page chess board.
