Migrants are reaching Britain by first gaining citizenship of another European Union country or through sham marriages to EU citizens, according to a government report cited by The Times. Authored by the chief inspector of borders and immigration, the report finds —
it was easier to gain citizenship in Italy and Germany than in the UK. Migrants are then able to move to Britain to work and access public services. […] Sham marriages to EU citizens living in Britain are also growing as non-Europeans try to get round government controls aimed at cutting overall immigration.
The report also finds little is done to prosecute those involved in sham marriages, unless there is a link with organised crime, writes the paper.
