‘Europe has had enough of it’

EU foreign affairs ministers meeting in Brussels on 22 July asked the European Commission to draft proposals for stricter economic sanctions against Russia in the wake of the downing of a Malaysian airliner in Ukraine on 17 July, reports Gazeta Wyborcza.
The sanctions are expected to focus on the defence sector, financial services – possibly barring Russia access to EU financial markets – and advanced technology, including the energy sector.

The EU has been working on economic sanctions against Russia since March, but now “the wrath of Europeans has caused governments of many EU countries to adopt a harsher position towards Putin”, notes the daily, quoting Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski, who said on Tuesday that “Russia has crossed many red lines already” and

If the draft sanctions plan had been ready today and if it was up to foreign affairs ministers, I believe, the sanctions would have been imposed today.
