Prime minister and current leader of the AKP conservative islamic party Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has won the first direct presidential election right from the first round, on 10 August, with 51,96 per cent of votes. The other candidates, the Secularist and nationalist Ekmeleddin Ihsanoğlu and Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş, scored respectively 38,33 per cent and 9,71 per cent. Turnover was almost 73 per cent.
In its English version, the pro-government daily notes that —

Erdoğan's well-deserved victory once again confirms his leadership and popularity. […] As president, Erdoğan will focus on resolving the Kurdish issue, accelerating the EU process. [He] will continue to challenge the domestic and regional status quo, and further establish Turkey as a political and economic powerhouse.
