On 25 August French prime minister Manuel Valls resigned, after being harshly attacked by dissident ministers and fellow Socialist MPs for implementing economic austerity policies allegedly dictated by Germany and responsible for the stagnating growth and steady unemployment, notes Libération.

Despite this context, François Hollande and Manuel Valls have decided not to change the current policy, because the measures taken since 2012 have not delivered yet, and to ask the EU to take the necessary growth measures. Enough to nurture a debate that threatens to degenerate into political crisis.
Immediately after Valls’ resignation Hollande asked him to form a new government, which should be announced on Tuesday.
