Over 100,000 Syrian refugees, mostly Kurds, have passed the Turkish border this weekend seeking shelter from Islamic State’s advance in Northeastern Syria. Turkish authorities opened the frontiers last Friday, but closed them on Sunday as clashes broke out between refugees and Turkish security guards. According to the UNHCR already 1,3 million Syrian refugees live in Turkey.
“The fight in northern Syria is a dilemma for president Obama”, writes De Volkskrant. “The Syrian Kurds [...] are an interesting ally, but they are also connected with the PKK, considered as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the EU and the USA.”
