Almost a year after the “Euromaidan” revolution that ousted the regime of former president Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine is preparing for early general elections on 26 October.
It will be a “test” for president Petro Poroshenko, “whose party might take up to 40 per cent of votes, meaning 170-180 seats (of 450)” writes Den. Along with allied parties, “Poroshenko could count on 240-250 seats.”
The vote will also be a test for the “Euromaidan” movement, which has “brought to the surface many social activists, many of whom will be elected in the next Parliament”, even if “they did not manage to organise themselves into a proper independent structure and had dispersed among the ‘old-new’ political forces.”
According to Ukraine’s Central Election Commission, about half of voters in Donetsk region a third in Luhansk region, where fighting between the army and pro-Russian rebels has been going on since last spring, will be able to take part in the voting.
