“Belgium re-opening its doors to imports of radioactive waste”, leads De Morgen. The Belgian authorities have given their approval to the Belgoprocess company to treat 120 tons of medical waste produced by the German company Nuclitec. The waste, which will be incinerated without changing its levels of radioactivity, is then to be sent back to Germany, where it will be stored. According to the Belgian newspaper, “This marks the first time in more than 20 years that such a quantity of radioactive waste will be imported into Belgium.” The newspaper notes that the “Transnuclear scandal” of 1998 had made it impossible till now to import and export radioactive waste. At the time, the management of the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre lied about the amount of nuclear waste imported and exported by Belgium.
