A single word, “Hero,” dominates the front page ofVečernji list. The ‘hero’ in question is former general Ante Gotovina, who faced war crimes and crimes against humanity charges for his role in the 1995 campaign to retake Krajina, which involved the ethnic cleansing of Serbs. A few hours after the newspaper was published, on 15 April, Gotovina was sentenced to 24 years in prison by the International Criminal Court for the Former Yugoslavia. One of the conditions for Croatian accession to the EU, Gotovina’s arrest in 2005 sparked a wave of protests in the country, where he is considered to have been the architect of Croatian independence following the break-up of Yugoslavia.
