Owned by Catholic group "L'oeuvre de Saint Paul" (The Works of Saint Paul) since 1871, Fribourg's major centre-left daily has been editorially free of church influence since the 1970s. With an influence extending well beyond its regional background, La Liberté has often been the first to break news of scandals in Swiss politics, and is also noted for feature reports on Third World issues. The La Liberté website offers pay-to-view access to content from the print edition and the newspaper's archives, as well as other services (small ads etc.).
