Romanian president Traian Băsescu has appointed secret service chief Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu prime minister to replace Emil Boc, who resigned yesterday after nearly a month of anti-austerity protests. The appointment is now be approved by parliament, which the opposition currently boycotting, calling for elections and Băsescu's resignation.

"Merkel and Sarkozy warn that if Greece does not put its budget under EU supervision, there will be no more financial aid," writes the Viennese daily.

Greek political parties supporting the national technocratic government have agreed to the new package of austerity measures demanded by the EU/ECB/IMF troika. They include cuts to the minimum wage and pensions as well as 15,000 additional public sector job cuts. In protest, the main unions have announced a general strike this 7 February.

This comes after hacker group Anonymous, which argues that the treaty attacks fundamental civil and digital rights, attacked several institutional websites, including that of the PM's party, the conservative ODS. The Czech decision comes after Poland signed the agreement but suspended ratification.
